Years ago - KiWePro (Kids Web Project)
It involved a web server upon which students from any ISD could share information about their school and their HyperStudio Stacks ... which, at the time, was VERY  popular software found in most ISD's.

Today ... a similar idea ... an Internet Treasure Hunt using Moodle ... for short: ITHoodle

Here's the jist ... a "buried treasure" is located on an ISD Moodle server somewhere in Texas.  There is one starting point (first clue) which for the purpose of description we'll call ITHoodle A.  The clues lead to as many ITHoodles as are participating.  A leads to ITHoodle B, which leads to ITHoodle C, which leads to ITHoodle D, which leads to ... and so on ... until ITHoodle X (X marks the spot, right?)

All the participating ISD's must have Moodles that are configured to allow MNet (Moodle networking) to a category (Treasure) and a course (Treasure Hunt).
Note: a separate instance/install of a Moodle just for this project is possible (might be the best way to do it also) and a "package" could be provided for downloading and installation.
Example: http://moodle.tcea.org/ithoodleA/

ITHoodle A is the only Moodle server to access the Treasure/Treasure Hunt on ITHoodle B, ITHoodle B the only one allowed to access ITHoodle C, and so on/forth.
(this prevents net savy kiddo's from finding ITHoodle X first and thus forcing them to follow the clues/path/exposure to various curriculum focuses provided by each participating ITHoodle)

All Moodles must have the following add ons installed: pre-requsite - which also means the server must be setup for groups and groupings.  The groups and groupings would facilitate each ISD tracking their own students activities on ANY ITHoodle - including grades!  Each ISD that participates MUST grant the lead teachers access to the locally installed ITHoodle as a teacher level.

Each Treasure Hunt site provides a focus on part of the multi- curriculum to be addressed:
ITHoodle A: Math
ITHoodle B: Social Studies
ITHoodle C: Language Arts
etc.,

and in their Treasure Hunt course each provides some pre-requsite activity(ies) which must be completed before they can access the next clue link.  Activity(ies) to be limited to no more than 2 and could use any of the Moodle tools which facilitate the learning objective for their curricular focus.
The ITHoodle with the focus of Language Arts for example, might have a requirement of students using any tool that facilitates writing (a glossary entry, a blog entry, a forum posting, a wiki entry, etc.)

Project is announced (first clue) on participating ISD web sites (not the ITHoodles) with a link to ITHoodle A.

Participating MoodleMasters would have to co-ordinate the setup of MoodleNets and groups and groupings as well as the individual Teacher accounts with restricted access to the Treasure category and Treasure Hunt course.
